Mazzoco Winery Masters Zinfandels

If you are looking for a place for high end, high quality zinfandel, you don’t have to look further than Mazzoco. This Sonoma winery has an assortment of zins that have garnered worldwide attention.

Mazzoco Winery is owned by Diane and Ken Wilson, who purchased the property saddled between Alexander and Dry Creek Valleys. It was their dream to create single vineyard designate zinfandels and that is just what Mazzoco has done, using many different vineyards to provide a selection of wines that are top notch.

The winemaker at Mazzoco also deserves credit for identifying the zinfandels deserving to be under the label. Antoine Favero was born in France and spent his first years in Peru, before relocating to Northern California. He attending UC-Davis and discovered his passion for winemaking.

The most recent accolades for the Mezzos Winery zinfandels include 10 gold and double gold medals at the Sonoma Harvest Fair; Best of Class at the San Francisco Chronicle Competition for the 2009 Maple Zinfandel and 2009 Smith Orchard Reserve Zinfandel; and 90 pt. ratings from Wine Spectator for the 2009 Pony Reserve Zinfandel and 2009 Warm Springs Ranch Zinfandel.

The Tres Hombres box of zinfandels is named after the tres hombres (three men) who matter most when it comes to making this wine: Juan, the vineyard manager; Antoine, the winemaker; and Kenneth, the owner. It’s produced only the years the zin is just right and the 2008 was such a year.

While there is no doubt that Mazzoco is known for its high quality zinfandels, that’s not the only wine you will find here. The 2009 Stuhlmuller Reserve Chardonnay is a buttery and oaky wine, drier than most chards. The 2005 Sonoma Coast Merlot, on the other hand, is bursting with ripe blueberry and raspberry in the start, with just a bit of white pepper on the finish. There is also a 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon that is more on the spice side than fruity.
